About Prof. Kamal Mahawar

Prof. Kamal Mahawar, an expert bariatric surgeon

Prof. Mahawar grew up in Kolkata in Eastern India and came to the UK in 2003 January. He has spent most of his time in UK in North East and lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne with his wife (a software engineer) and son (who is at university!). 

 

He obtained his Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the famous Calcutta Medical College (as it was then called) in 1996. Calcutta Medical College was the medical college in South East India. He passed out with several honours, distinctions and was ranked top of his class of nearly 150 students! He was also given a prize (B C Roy medal) by Mr. I K Gujral, then Prime Minister of India for his achievements. 

 

He then went to Chandigarh in North India to pursue his Masters in General Surgery (MS) at the very prestigious Postgraduate Institution of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). He qualified in December 2000 and then worked as a Senior Resident in the Department of general and transplant surgery there before emigrating to the UK.

In the United Kingdom, he obtained an MSc in Human Immunity at Liverpool University with distinction and obtained structured higher surgical training in the Northern Deanery. During his training, he worked at several hospitals such as Caithness General Hospital in Wick, Scotland; Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside, Darlington Memorial Hospital in Darlington, Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington, University Hospital of Hartlepool in Hospital, University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, Sunderland Royal Hospital in Sunderland, and North Tyneside General Hospital in North Tyneside before taking up his consultant job at Sunderland Royal Hospital in April 2011. 

Prof. Mahawar is a recognised professional leader and academician. He is easily one of the most published surgeons worldwide. His publications can be see here on PubMed and ResearchGate. He has delivered invited lectures at conferences in countries around the world and has mentored surgeons in this country and abroad in the field of general and bariatric surgery. He is a vising professor at University of Sunderland and an external advisor to Helen McArdle Research Institute since 2019.  He was the only British bariatric surgeon on the recently updated International and American Bariatric Surgery guidelines. 

 

He regularly performs procedures like laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic one anastomosis gastric bypass (also known as mini gastric bypass), laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass, revisional bariatric surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole surgery to remove gall bladder), hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, endoscopy etc with an exceptional safety record. 

 

Professor Mahawar has written a book on the ethics in his profession (The Ethical Doctor published by Harper Collins) perhaps suggesting his approach to medical practice in general and private practice in particular (where things are sometimes less honourable than they ought to be). This book and his subsequent book on obesity (Fight with Fat) got widespread media coverage when they were published.
